BARRY'S fourth annual race in aid of the Ty Hafan Children's Hospice was a run-away success.
Liaison Officer Sandie Grindley was thrilled with the number of people who turned up for the 5k race.
She told the News: "Out of the 872 people who registered to take part, a wonderful 620 turned up. That is a phenomenal result. And they all crossed the finishing line as well."
Last year, fewer people took part in the race, but Ty Hafan still managed to net a clear £30,000 from the event.
This year, Sandie is hoping to better that amount.
She added: "We won't know exactly how much money will have been raised for a few weeks yet as people collect their sponsorship.
But with so many participants crossing the finishing line, we hope to top last year's level."
Capital Radio DJ Tony Wright, who started the race last year, took part this time round. Sandie said: "Tony has given us incredible support.
"Last year he commented that he wouldn't mind taking part in the race himself.
So at the beginning of the year, we contacted him, reminded him of his promise and invited him to take part.
We were thrilled when he agreed and he has been fantastic.
"He has plugged the race so many times on his programme.
And he was obviously well-prepared, because he crossed the line in under half-an-hour."
She added: "I would like to say a big thank you to all our regular supporters, especially Wendy Edwards and Mick McGeoch, who take part every year.
And to all the marshals, stewards, police and St John's Ambulance, without whom this event could not take place."
In first place for the men was Phil Cook of Barry, finishing in an impressive 16 minutes, 39 seconds.
And for the women it was Anne Evans, who lives just outside Merthyr Tydfil, coming in at 18 minutes, 55 seconds.
