Ducks seen

I WRITE as a long-term resident of a flat which overlooks Lower Gladstone Gardens.

Mr Turnball (Barry and District News, May 1) states that he has never seen ducks in this park before.

Actually, mallards have attempted to establish near the pond on several occasions. They have always failed. This is not necessarily due to "gangs of young people" but more probably due to dog walkers.

Mr Turnball appears not to know that some time ago notices appeared on the park gates forbidding the presence of dogs in the park.

These notices have disappeared recently, either removed by those who disapprove of them or by the local authority which realises that it cannot enforce them.

This little park is one of the few remaining jewels in the crown of Barry.

It is frequently abused by mindless vandals but to the credit of the local authority my periodic appeals to erase graffiti and to remove debris from the pond have always been heeded.

What is needed is constant vigilance. Bring back the park keepers and, Mr Turnball, continue to walk your dog - but not necessarily in Lower Gladstone Gardens.
