Mayor takes Sea Cadets on board

Barry Town Council welcomed in their new Mayor with a Guard of Honour from the Sea Cadets.

The youngsters, who are one of Cllr Jane Andrews' chosen charities, saw her sworn in at the Memorial Hall, on Monday, May 12.

The 44 year old, has been chosen as the new Barry Town Mayor after a year spent as deputy to Cllr Denys Tooze.

Her Consort is Felicity Williams. The Deputy Mayor is Cllr Olga Cash, the Consort is Margaret Kirby.

Cllr Andrews, an employee at CELTIC Technologies, was welcomed by retiring mayor Cllr Tooze.

He said: "Last year is a year I will never forget. Wonderful things have happened over the last 12 months, too many to say. I have enjoyed the experience.

I would like to thank Barry Town Council for this opportunity.

Also, Ian Harris and his staff, especially Jane Comerford and Angie Norman for their help. Without them I would have been lost. Thank you for your support. And I wish Jane every success in the forthcoming year."

Cllr Andrews, who lives in Gradon Close, Cadoxton, with her car Midgey, thanked him and then spoke of her two chosen charities - the Sea Cadets and Ty Hafan Children's Hospice.

She said: "I have chosen Ty Hafan because I think the Noah's Ark appeal has taken some of the focus from them. While I can appreciate the work being done for Noah's Ark, I want to address the balance this year, giving them the support they deserve.

"Barry Sea Cadets was chosen because I work with a lady heavily involved in the youth group. I have seen the dedication and commitment that goes into the running of it.

"As permitted by this post, I have appointed a Mayor's Cadet. Her name is Rebecca Lake and she will assist me in this coming year."
