DVD review: 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'

ANYONE who is thinking about getting married should watch this movie.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a romantic comedy following the dull and uninteresting life of 30-year old Toula Portokalos.

At the three decade mark, Toula, being Greek, is considered well past her sell-by date and has nothing to look forward to except a long, pointless life working in her family's restaurant, Dancing Zorba's.

All her father Gus wants is for her to get married to a nice Greek boy. But frumpy Toula is looking for more in life.

And when heartthrob Ian Miller walks into the restaurant, even though she makes a complete fool of herself in front of him, it gives her a kick-start to improve her prospects.

Her mother convinces Gus to let Toula take some computer classes at college, cunningly allowing him think it is all his idea. With those classes under her belt, she then takes over her aunt's travel agency.

Then the unthinkable happens. The very same Ian Miller, a high school English teacher, notices her!

They date secretly for a while before Toula's family finds out. Her father is livid over her dating a non-Greek.

Given a massive thumbs up critics, this movie is perhaps not as hysterically funny as some would have you believe.

But there are some truly lovely moments, and definitely a couple of times where you will chuckle. So raise your glasses, give a hearty Oopah! and enjoy this flick.
