50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 7, 1953:

Speaking in the House of Commons last week, Mr Raymond Gower MP for Barry, asked the Minister of Pensions, Mr Heathcote Amory, what would be the estimated additional cost to his department of increasing the basic rate of pensions paid to disabled war pensioners to 75s a week.

The annual general meeting of the Barry Automobile Club was held at the Park Hotel, Barry, on Monday week. The Chairman Mr Frank Holmes, gave a resume of the club's activities during the past year.

Complaints that the selling of inferior coal in Barry at 5s 6d, the price of the good class coal, was legalised robbery were made at a meeting of the Barry TUC.

A carnival ball to celebrate the Coronation was held at Bindles by the 19 MU Sports and Social Club, RAF St Athan on Friday when 320 people danced to the music of Jack Evans and his band.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 11, 1978:

A prolonged battle seems likely over a controversial planning application to convert "Burrator" a detached house at Merthyr Dyfan Road, Barry, into a public house.

After a delay of more than one year Barry High Street's long awaited one way traffic system, designed to ease congestion, will come into being from 9am on Monday next.

The Cardiff United District of the Ancient Order of Foresters, which covers Barry, recently presented a seat for Queen Street, Cardiff to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Barry (Cllr and Mrs Ken Adams) recently visited the Barry branch club of the Royal Air Forces Association and expressed thanks to the branch for the work carried out by the RAFA in Barry.
