DVD review Signs

MEL Gibson takes a thought provoking role in the sci-fi thriller Signs.

Six months before the story line starts, Father Graham Hess (Gibson) loses his wife in a horrific road accident.

Unable to believe in a god that would allow an innocent woman to die, the Reverend loses his faith.

So when mysterious crop designs start appearing in his corn fields, Graham has trouble finding a solution to it.

In a media frenzy, it soon becomes clear these signs are some kind of map and extra-terrestrials are responsible.

With reports that strange crafts are found within one mile of the 500-foot crop designs, it is clear the Hess household will soon have very unwelcome visitors.

Graham tries to prepare his children, sensitive Bo, excellent played by Abigail Breslin, and asthmatic Morgan (Rory Culkin), and Graham's younger brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix), for the inevitable without the comfort of religion.

But a dramatic showdown between the family and the visitors, Graham remembers his dead wife's last words, witnesses a miracle, and has his belief in God restored.

Running for over 100 minutes, the movie literally flies by.

The critically acclaimed director M Night Shymalan, responsible for Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, has woven his magic again.

This is, without doubt, an excellent film and definitely worth a second watch.
