Barry 5, Aberystwyth 1
BARRY triumphantly won the League championship for the 7th time and they did so in style with some breathtaking football which had Gary Finlay's side reeling.
There were some stunning moves, stunning goals and plenty of entertainment for the 600 watching spectators. Had Cardiff City not been home then maybe the crowd would have been closer to a thousand.
The football however was of a very high standard. since the signing of Akinfenwa, the team has reached a higher standard. Coupled with top class keeper Baruwa there is no doubt these players have encouraged the team to lift their standards.
Teams playing against Barry now find that instead of playing Barry they are playing Barry Town plus a new ingredient has been added.
Man of the match Tom Ramasut was in superb form and looked as fresh as a daisy. Ramasut has not had the best of seasons but on this display he showed what a good player he can be.
Kevin Green, Barry's Chief Executive was delighted with the performance and this season, with the scoop of new chairman John Fashanu has been extremely productive. Kenny Brown was naturally delighted and is really proud of his players and what they have achieved. "We wanted to end on a high note and I believe that we showed great professionalism," he said.
The supporters cheered from start to finish and were ecstatic as Lee Jarman lifted the cup and the players celebrated in style. As for the game, Aberystwyth came out with a game plan to get an early goal.
Baruwa had to block a fierce shot as Aberystwyth pressed hard in the opening minutes. The visitors attempts at forcing the pace left them exposed at the back. Bayo on a clear run one on one, was just kept from scoring by a good stop by the keeper.
On 17 minutes Ramasut made a great run down the left, and chipped the ball over the advancing keeper. The ball fell to top scorer Jamie Moralee who with an open goal managed to hit the ball over the bar.
The former Watford player when asked how he missed, blamed the sun, the wind and an awkward bounce. Like a true professional, Moralee immediately put the record straight netting a pass from Lee Phillips, 1-0 after 18 minutes.
For Aberystwyth Gavin Allen tried an awkward angled chip which was heading for the top corner but Baruwa made a great save to flip the ball over the bar.
After Bayo had a header saved, he broke once more on goal but hit his shot too early and was wide of the post. Jon French made it 2-0 on 28 minutes with Barry calling all the shots.
After Jamie Jenkins powered a deep cross from Lee Jarman just over, Barry went 3-0 up with Bayo collecting a ball from Lee Phillips, he fired into the corner of the net with ease. At the break Barry's 3-0 lead could easily have been doubled had they taken their chances.
The Dragons were just toying with Aberystwyth and playing exhibition football. Nathan Cotterill on for Phillips was beginning to play his part with some neat crosses from the left.
His first was headed just wide by Moralee. His second, after interchanging with Bayo was volleyed home by Moralee for 4-0. Lee Spike pulled a goal back for Aberystwyth just after but it was Barry's day and they were determined to end the league season on a high note.
Gary Lloyd sent Cotterill on his way and his pass was put home by Ramasut to finish the scoring on 5-1. Scott Morgan had a fine run beating four defenders but his shot could not beat the keeper. Aberystwyth were totally out-classed and it all looks good for the Welsh Cup Final on Sunday, May 11.
Cwmbran lost 4-0 to Haverfordwest and this after their manager Rhodri Jones feels that his side is good enough to beat Barry. "Having seen Barry play I believe we can beat them. With our strongest team out we are capable of winning," said Jones.
