CD review Home Simply Red

SIMPLY Red's newest album release Home is typically Mick Hucknall - at least the songs he penned are.

But there may be a few surprises for the discerning listener.

His latest single Sunrise may have a familiar tune in the background.

And if you are confused, all you have to do is wait for the last verse, and the words by Daryl Hall and John Oates will soon set the record straight.

On this album, Hucknall takes old songs and puts his own press on them - especially with that old smoochy You Make Me Feel Brand New.

And while it might not be all that well-known, anyone who has ever listened to Bob Dylan could not fail to recognise his influence in Hucknall's voice on the cover of Positively 4th Street.

Even if you have never heard the song, Hucknall does a good job of imitating Dylan's style, and it works quite well.

The album has a bit of a funk thing going on, but still with that tinge of Red you expect.

Whether the album will be as popular as Stars, only time will tell, but it does have potential, with a comfortable mix of laid-back tracks and up-beat melodies
