IMPROVING skills are high on the leaderboard of a new golf initiative for Vale of Glamorgan youngsters.
Aiming to attract more children into playing golf on a regular basis, the first phase of the scheme involving the Vale Council's Sports Development Unit, the Golf Foundation and the South Wales Driving Range at Port Road West, Barry, has just concluded.
A 10-week programme focused on introducing children aged seven to 12 years to the basic skills of the game, with youngsters developing putting, driving and chipping skills and learning the etiquette of the sport as a stepping stone to joining the club.
Cllr Emlyn Williams, who presented youngsters with Golf Foundation Blue Merit Award Certificates, said: "The golf coaching centre is fun and provides an excellent mechanism for young people to learn the basic skills of golf so that, when they join a local club, they are comfortable with the rules and skills of the game.
"The Golf Foundation and Simon Cox, from the South Wales Driving Range, are to be congratulated on their efforts to make the sport more accessible to young people."
Anyone requiring more information about golf development in the Vale should contact Paul Nanji, Sports Development Manager, on 01446 704614.
