50 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of April 16, 1953:

Three hundred chickens were burnt on Sunday when a chicken farm at Wenvoe caught fire.

The Barry Fire Brigade were called and soon had the fire under control.

The Mount Pleasant Singers gave a concert for the Cadoxton Moors OAP No 5 Branch at the OAP Hall, Cadoxton, on Sunday. Mr A Reynolds proposed a vote of thanks to the party.

Taking the Chair at the Town Council meeting on Monday night, in the absence of the Mayor (Ald K C Steer) was Deputy Mayor (Cllr Bert King).

There was keen competition for the honour of being chosen Miss Barry at the dance organised by the Carnival Committee at Bindles on Friday. Judges were Mr Alun Williams of the BBC and Mrs Alan Reardon Smith, who made a short list of six.

Headed by the splendid sum of £73 11s 3d, raised by a dance organised by the Barry Central Old English Dancing Club, the latest list of donations to the Mayor of Barry's Flood Disaster Fund has brought the total of £1,128 15s 1d.

25 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of April 20, 1978:

Following a letter to Cllr Mrs I C Reynolds from a Barry resident about the speed traffic runs through the road in Portkkerry Park, the Vale's Leisure Service Committee decided to recommend a speed limit of 20mph.

Apparent lack of progress on a request to British Rail to place an additional railway halt at Dinas Powis is worrying Barry MP Sir Raymond Gower, and local councillors.

A controversial two and a half million housing development scheme for Dobbins Road, Barry, has been abandoned by the Vale Council's Housing Committee.

At the Welsh Junior Championships on Monday, Rhoose Boxing Club's Jonathon Alsop won the Class 'A' (54 kilo) title.
