Residents urge action on yobs

PEOPLE in Barry's most deprived area have grilled a top politician over the controversial anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOS).

Government Home Office Minister, the Right Honourable John Denham, visited Gibbonsdown Community Centre on Monday, December 16 to discuss the policy.

He was met by Welsh Assembly Health Minister Jane Hutt and John Smith MP, as well as other representatives from the community including Barry Town Council vice-chairman of finance, Harry Clease and Cllr Bob Wilkinson from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Molly Conway, chairman of the Gibbonsdown Residents' Board said: "I want to talk to Mr Denham about the lack of serving anti-social behaviour orders and parenting orders when they are blatantly needed.

"We have five of the worst persistent offenders in Barry living on the Gibbonsdown estate, and we feel that it is the duty of the Vale of Glamorgan Council to make sure that any and all powers we have are used to help the estate."

In the 45-minute meeting, Mr Denham was given the opportunity to talk about the issues surrounding the serving of anti-social behaviour orders and how best to use them to maximise their effect.
