50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of December 11, 1952:

Mr T Rees, a storekeeper in the Borough Engineer's Department, has been successful in passing the clerical examination of the Local Government Examinations Board.

Mr H Raymond Gower, MP for Barry, has kindly consented to become president of the Barry & District Cage Bird Society.

A former pupil of the Barry Girls Grammar School, Barbara Clissett, has been appointed a junior scientific officer to the Blood Transfusion Station based in Manchester.

Mr J Pereira addressed the OAP No 3 Branch (Suburb) on Monday on road safety.

On Friday, at the British Legion Hall, Barry Dock, the Women's Branch of the Barry British Legion held their annual Christmas bazaar.

At the last meeting of the 20th Century Club before Christmas a talk was given by Miss Winifred Williams entitled 'Some of the plants to be found in the neighbourhood of Barry'.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of December 8, 1977:

Tom Dawkes, a librarian living in Dinas Powys, is one of the contestants in the last of the semi finals of Mastermind, which will be shown on BBC1 and BBC Wales Television on Tuesday, December 13.

Two pupils represented Bryn Hafren Girls' School in a Spoken German Competition held at University College, Cardiff, on Friday week. They were Kathryn Davies of the fourth year and Michele Field of the third year.

With only 12 more years to run, the director of Legal and Administrative Services (Mr Eric Davies) has advised the Vale's Leisure Services Committee to seek out the freehold of the land at Barry Road/Davies Street, Barry.

November was a busy and enjoyable month for members of Llantwit Major Women's Institute. It started with the visit of VCO Mrs Noblett at the annual meeting.

At Buckingham Palace on Tuesday week a Barry man, Mr Fred Moore, of Wenvoe Terrace, received his MBE for services to medical research.
