Bypass

THE forthcoming restriction of traffic to 20mph in certain areas of Dinas Powys is noted.

The complete answer to the continuing traffic problem at Dinas is the construction of the proposed Dinas bypass.

This, I believe, was blocked by the present unitary authority - Mr J Maitland being responsible at that time - in classifying the ridiculously routed Airport link road, supposedly to the M4, as a first priority-based purely on economical considerations.

The Dinas bypass, although a safety requirement, was then labelled as a second priority.

The Welsh Office confirmed at that time the question of priorities rested purely with the new Unitary Authority - councillors were made aware of this fact .

This move, because of the high value of capital required, stifled all funding with absolutely no consideration being given to their then second priority. Had the Dinas project been put forward as a first priority with the correct approach on the grounds of safety and its much lower capital requirements, authorisation by the Welsh office would have been very difficult to refuse. By now it would have been up and running.

Since the airport link road is nowhere near fruition and will probably be based on an entirely new routing, one ponders on the amount of taxpayers' money already expended on a project which will no doubt be changed.

There is a further point to be noted - a limited few do not want the Dinas bypass.
