BARRY police is launching a hard-hitting campaign aimed at cutting down sex attacks.
Officers, with the help of pub and club owners, are warning drinkers of the dangers of 'spiking' over the festive period.
The number of sex attacks on females who have had illegal substances dropped in their drinks has spiralled in recent years.
Now police in all of the Welsh authorities are keen to stamp out this particularly nasty crime. They have spoken to youth groups, clubs and pubs and they are distributing posters and beer mats in a bid to raise awareness of the issue.
PC Peter Godfrey, Licensing Officer in the Vale told the News: "This is a national campaign to raise awareness of the unfortunate possibility of drinks being spiked.
"The campaign is reminding pub and club-goers to think about where they are leaving their drinks and not to leave them unattended."
He added: "Spiking is sometimes meant as a harmless prank but can lead to serious consequences.
"But the practical jokers don't take into consideration the fact that their victims may be on medication or have pre-existing medical conditions. And the most serious incidents have actually resulted in offences of rape or assault."
The campaign not only gives tips on how to reduce the risks, it also encourages people to come forward if they have been unwittingly made a victim.
Some of the substances used in these attacks can induce a rapid feeling of intoxication and leave the person vulnerable to attack. If this happens, the police are actively promoting people to come forward so an investigation can be undertaken.
PC Godfrey added: "We are delivering 54,000 beet mats and 260 posters to all premises in the Vale of Glamorgan as part of the 'Think Safe, Drink Safe' message.
"Not only does it give revellers a visual remind to be aware, but it also appeals to licensees and staff to keep an eye on any suspicious behaviour and to report to the police any incidents which may involve spiking."
