50 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of December 4, 1952:

The work of Mr Aneurin Davies in establishing the first Welsh School in Barry and other public activities was recognised at a presentation dinner and social evening at the Coleg-y-Fro, Rhoose.

A fire in the basement of Williams Deacons Bank Chambers, Holton Road, Barry Dock, on Friday caused minor damage to electrical wiring and gas pipes.

A large audience was present at the Barry Music Club last week to hear a talk by Mr Leslie BA LRAM, entitled 'A Critic on the Loose'.

At the third annual dinner of the Royal Institute of Chemistry and the Society of Chemical Industry (South Wales section), at the Connaught Rooms, Cardiff, on Friday, a presentation was made to Mr G M Kerman FRIC.

After a long absence from Barry, Joe Thomas, gold medallist and ace drummer of Wales, was back in his old place - drummer in Bert Miller's New Bindles' Band - on Saturday.

Proceeds of the Barry YMCA sale of work were in the region of £160.

25 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of December 1, 1977:

An unofficial strike by 150 men at three Geest Line depots, including 60 workers at Barry Docks, is costing the company thousands of pounds in lost orders and has caused the lay off of 300 workers in England.

At a meeting of the Vale Leisure Services Committee on Tuesday week, a detailed report was called for from the authority's Technical Engineering Services Department on the feasibility of providing a slipway at Rhoose beach.

Meeting H R H Prince Charles tomorrow (Friday) is local nurse Miss Susan Govier, daughter of Mr and Mrs D Govier of Newhouse, Neale Street.

Mrs E Williams, leader of the Colcot Darby and Joan Club, was the guest speaker at Thursday's meeting of the Dinam WRVS Darby and Joan Club.

Ruth Williams of Dinas Powys, will take part in this week's edition of HTV Wales' quiz programme for children Camau Cantamil.
