Derek sets out in all weathers

BARRY'S celebrity weatherman, Derek Brockway, has ventured out of the BBC studio, donned his walking boots and is taking us on a four-part journey of Snowdonia.

In the 'Weatherman Walking' series, on BBC Radio Wales, Derek brings listeners closer to the natural splendour found within our own borders.

He said: "The scenery in Snowdonia is breathtaking.

Doing this programme gave me the opportunity to get away from the studio and computer calculations.

The whole experience has made me aware of just what Wales has to offer."

Derek is joined by Snowdonia expert Twm Elias, a senior lecturer and course organiser at Plas Tan y Bwlch, which is a residential centre teaching people about the surrounding area.

And the programme is not just about walking.

Each week, a different area of the National Park is visited, as are sights of special interest. From ancient legend to geology, each walk has a tale to tell.

From 19th Century Welsh princes and mercenary magicians, to the alleged burial place of Beddgelert, Wales' bravest dog and tales of gruesome murder, the four programmes explore the landscape of the national park.

Producer of 'Weatherman Walking', Julian Carey said: There's a certain irony in hearing someone who usually just talks about the weather charging around the countryside being affected by some truly horrendous weather himself."

The third programme will be broadcast on BBC Radio Wales on Sunday December 8, at 12.30pm.
