Jamie collects ticket to fame

BARRY'S very own Popstar has beaten off thousands of hopefuls to be one of the five members of the newest group on the music scene.

Seventeen-year-old Jamie Shaw had a nail-baiting experience on Saturday night while waiting to find out if he had got into the band.

His mum Cheryl spoke about the night her son won his ticket to fame.

She told the News: "It was an unbelievable night. We were up for most of it, and got back to Barry at around 6am on Sunday."

Slowly the members were announced, and the line was whittled away. It came down to the last two; just Jamie and Chris Park.

Cheryl said: "We and Chris's family were taken down in front of the stage so we could be there to console whichever one didn't get in."

The ITV 1 programme, hosted by Davina McCall, made the rivetted studio audience, the millions of viewers and the last two anxious contenders wait when they cut to a commercial break before releasing the name of the last member.

The long weeks of preparation and worry were over. Jamie was the fifth, final and youngest member of the band called One True Voice.

When Jamie was told the news that he was a member of the group, he was overjoyed. Cheryl added: "When Jamie's name was called, it was so overwhelming, I cried.

I really felt for Chris and I was so proud and pleased for Jamie. It's what he's been working for since he was four-years-old.

"We had one hour with him before he was rushed off, and we won't see him now until Christmas, when we'll have a relaxing family day.

By then we'll know whether they have made the number one spot."
