Groom dashes off to fire duty

A NEWLY-wed couple had to watch the clock as they tied the knot last week. Thirty-two-year old Sara Adams and her fianc Richard Coborn, 27, of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards have been engaged for a year.

They had planned to marry when he came home from duty in Bosnia after six months of being apart.

They only had two weeks, but had organised everything to clockwork perfection. That is, until the groom was told that he was on stand-by fire duty.

Sara's mother Denise of Gadlys Road East said: "Richard knew he only had two weeks before he had to get back to base, but they were hoping to be able to spend it together.

When he arrived back in the country, he was told he had just a few days before he was due in Stratford-upon-Avon to be on the Green Goddesses."

Determined to have their big day, Sara and Richard made sure the ceremony was perfect. They were married on November 1 in the Civic Offices.

Sara wore an ivory Jasper Conran creation with a tiara and veil and a bouquet of crimson and ivory roses.

Richard completed her look by wearing his uniform.

Her two children Jamilea, 13, and Charlie, 8, were the bridesmaids and Richard's nephew Jack Jones, 3, was the ring-bearer.

Richard's brother Thomas, 11, fulfilled his role as usher.

Over 70 family and friends turned up for the ceremony and the afternoon reception in the BP Sports and Social Club, Sully.

And more than 200 arrived at the Barry Island Conservative Club for the evening do.

After the receptions, the pair managed to spend one night in the Hilton Hotel before Richard had to rush off for duty.

The happy couple are now in the process of deciding where to go on honeymoon. But to be on the safe side, they are booking it for 2003.
