Cinema review 'Mr Deeds'

SAID to be a classic, Mr Deeds Goes To Town is meant to be one of legendary director, Frank Capra's finest. Now the remake is here, who of Hollywood's finest could step into the shoes of Gary Cooper?

Well, we could have had Tom Hanks, Nicolas Cage or possibly Ben Affleck - so who did we get? Adam Sandler.

When a billionaire shareholder dies, his unheard of grandson (Mr Deeds) from a small American town inherits the money.

Mr Deeds moves to New York for a short while he instantly makes an impression - a bad one, as the media try to rub his name in dirt with the help of an undercover reporter. But Deeds and the reporter fall in love.

I'm a fan of Sandler and I believe that along with his comic talents, he also has the potential to become a serious dramatic actor too (which may be proved next year when he takes the role of a mentally insane man in a film directed by P T Anderson).

But the problem is that 70 percent of his characters are all the same. From Airheads to Happy Gilmore and from The Wedding Singer to Mr Deeds, he always plays the normal, loveable nice guy who tries to get along with everyone.

But once you've seen one film, you've pretty much seen them all.

Luckily enough this film hasn't turned out to be a complete mess; instead it's pleasantly entertaining throughout, even if Sandler never gets the chance to go hyper, shouting abuse at people every once in a while.

Sandler cameo regulars, Steve Buscemi and Rob Schneider make a very much welcome return (even if they are beginning to get a bit boring), and Winona Ryder surprisingly churns out a pleasant performance.

It's a film that Sandler haters will undoubtedly hate, and a film that Sandler fans may feel a little bit cheated by, but it's likable enough and hilarious at times so Mr Deeds surely made a welcome visit to town!
