50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry and District News of November 13, 1952:

There is still no indication that a settlement has been reached over the Romilly School strike.

For the fourth year in succession the Barry Fire Brigade were not called out to deal with any fires on Guy Fawkes Day.

There has been appreciative comment on the floodlighting of the Memorial Hall and the Cenotaph during the evenings of Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, the period of the Armistice Remembrance.

The Murch Housing Estate. Dinas Powis was officially opened on Tuesday by Major C G Traherne, Lord Lieutenant of Glamorgan.

Membership of the Barry Music Club continues to grow this season and on Tuesday week some 60 members were present at the weekly meeting at St Baruc's School in Park Road.

The first annual dance organised by the Social Club of Albright and Wilson Ltd, was held at Bindles Ballroom, on Tuesday week, when a company of more than 300 were present.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of November 10, 1977:

'There was never a more deserving man in Barry' were the words which summed up the congratulations showered on Bill Gardiner, of Court Road, winner of the October "Service to Sport Award."

At the Spinney Club, Swansea last week, a cheque was presented to Miss Gwen Winslade of Glanmor Crescent, Barry, in appreciation of 50 years service to the Barry Division of the Liberal Association.

The Barry Male Voice Choir singing well known operatic choruses will feature in HTV's "Behind the Footlights" which will be shown on Thursday, November 17.

Following the very heavy early evening rain at Romilly Park on Saturday, just 3,000 people turned up for this year's Fireworks Fiesta at Romilly Park.

Six young cooks, including Cheryl Hole, of Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School, will take part in the South Glamorgan County final of the Wales Gas Schools Cookery Competition.
