BARRY people paid their respects last weekend to those who gave their lives in war so that we might keep our freedom.
The Remembrance Sunday service took place on November 10 this year.
Members of the armed forces past and present assembled at Kings Square at 10am and marched to the Merchant Navy Memorial.
Then the long train of people, lead by a sombre military band, made its way along Gladstone Road before reaching the Cenotaph in Barry's Remembrance Garden, in the grounds of the Memorial Hall.
The Last Post and Reveille were sounded, signalling the start of the two minute silence, which everyone observed in the utmost reverence.
At 10.55am, there was a service held for all the men and women who sacrificed themselves so that future generations could enjoy their liberty.
While the day was grey and misty, the threatening rain stayed away until the end of the service
Many people attended on the day, from parents of children in organisations like Brownies, Guides and St John Ambulance, to local councillors and other prominent members of the community.
After Barry Town mayor Dennys Tooze began the wreath laying ceremony, closely followed by former town mayor cllr Margaret Wilkinson, Assembly Member Jane Hutt laid her offering at the Cenotaph, followed by Superintendent Colin Jones, among many more from Barry Town Council and the Vale of Glamorgan County Council.
The Lord's Prayer was read out, and the crowds of people who gathered for the commemoration joined in.
Following the service held around the Cenotaph, the young cadets and older members of the armed forces filed into the Barry Memorial Hall for another service, conducted by the Royal British Legion chaplain.
All people were welcome to attend, and many members of the public turned up specifically to show their respect.
