Pony nursed back to health

A DINAS Powys pony has fought back to health with help from an appeal by the Penarth Times.

Shetland pony Fury, who is 17 years old but only 32 inches high, needed veterinary care before he could walk properly again.

Sue Lewis, of Ashgrove, Dinas Powys, made the appeal on behalf of Margaret Peters who now owns him.

At one time Fury lived in Dinas with Helen King who ran Dinas Powys Animal Aid.

Sadly Helen died and the centre was closed which meant the animals, including Fury, were re-homed.

Thanks to the appeal more than £650 was raised to help Fury, whose vet bill came to £2,000.

Sue said: "We are very grateful to all the people who gave their support and money to help Fury.

"He is a very lively horse and gives a huge amount of pleasure to everyone.

"For such a small chap he has got a big personality and a big heart."

And before vets could operate he proved that because he was still running around the stable after being fed sedatives.

But other larger horses were out like a light as soon after they took the pills.

She continued by saying that even though Fury is tiny he managed to get on the Horse of the Year Show.

At the prestigious event at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, in October, Fury lead Shire horses into the arena.

He was dwarfed by the other animals but was not phased by the event.

In his time at Animal Aid he helped advertise Welsh Brewers and pulled a little dray cart with the brewer's logo on it.

The medical care that Fury received in Wiltshire was for laminitis, inflammation inside the hooves which causes pain and lameness.

Without that treatment he would have been put down but with special shoes and a strict diet he can live a happy life.
