50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the News of November 6, 1952: Well-known BBC Broadcasters are appearing in the Noson Lawen to be held in the Memorial Hall tomorrow (Friday) at 7.15pm. The proceeds of the Noson Lawen are being devoted to the Welsh Nursery school fund.

Tom Baxter-Wright son of Capt Baxter-Wright, the Docks Master earned his seventh "cap" for the Midlands Rugby XV, when he played for them last week against a combined Notts, Lincs and Derby team.

With the kind co-operation of the Mayor Ald K C Steer, the British Legion Remembrance Day morning parade service will be re-instituted.

Maesteg Harlequins who a few years ago, were a first team fixture, provided the opposition at Stumpy Lodge on Saturday when an unusually long list of casualties resulted in the home team fielding.

When the whaling vessel "Southern Opal" paid off in Barry during the summer, two parties of scholars from the Romilly Boys' Secondary School paid interesting trips to the ship.

A model of the first Barry Lifeboat, the "John Wesley" which was exhibited at the Model Engineers' Exhibition at London, has won for its creator Mr George Swarts, 24 Evelyn Street, Barry, a bronze medal. Mr Swarts is coxon of the Barry lifeboat.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the News of November 3, 1977: Eighteen-year-old Claire Young of Colcot Road, Barry proudly displayed awards she won at the 45th annual bread, cake and confectionery exhibition at Cardiff's City Hall last week.

The Royal British Legion are hoping for a generous response to their annual Poppy Fund Appeal.

The local branch chairman, Mr William A Phillips said that last year's response had been excellent and £1,055 has been raised.

Barry is to get its long awaited indoor swimming pool - it is likely to form just a part of a large centrally situated leisure complex of the future - and the pool project could, if everything goes to plan, be completed within the next two years.

The new Welsh Junior Biathlon (cross country, swimming and riding) Champion is Michael Perigrine (16) of Wellwood Drive, Dinas Powys.

Mrs Molly Stevens was the guest at the St Nicholas Darby and Joan Club on Friday week.
