The Vale of Glamorgan Council are the people, you will remember, who are elected to look after the interests of you and I; the inhabitants of the Vale, which includes Barry.
That started me really thinking. About the architectural gems of Holton Road (and it's missing bits).
About the municipal treasure that is the Town Hall, and King Square with the national park behind; about the Knap; about the run down council estates to the north of Barry; about the proposed walkway from Penarth pier to Cardiff Bay (estimated cost thirteen million quid). Our revered Vale of Glamorgan Council is responsible for all these.
Do you suppose the former Barry UDC would have allowed things to get in this state?
Do you suppose that the former Penarth UDC (whom I know from bitter experience to have been parsimonious in the extreme) would have even thought that Penarthians should pay £13,000,000 out of the rates for such a useless and harebrained scheme?
No problem for the Vale Council though, just increase council tax in Barry (among other places).
I suggest to you that this council (which was one of the Conservatives poorer ideas) should cease to have control of Barry, since it does not seem able properly to look after the disparate needs of the town and the Vale, and that representations should be made to Assembly (though I don't support that either) that a council be elected solely for the purpose of looking after the interests of the Barry.
As an aside to this, do you know there are 48 Vale of Glamorgan councillors, of whom only 18 represent wards in Barry. True!
Could this possibly be the reason that Barry is so poorly served?
