Anger over new housing scheme

RHOOSE residents are furious after discovering planning applications have been put in to the council for yet more houses.

The locals say that the area is already overrun with new development, and there is no room for more.

Recent house-buyer Linda Gershenson, 50, moved into Fontygary Road in May.

But despite the land searchers carried out before she bought her new property, there was no indication that a further 200 houses were planned for Rhoose Point.

She told the News: "The application has been 'low-key'. Only those households directly around the proposed development are being made aware of the plans."

The group of angry neighbours along Fontygary Road were shocked to find the only other notification available to the rest of the village was an A4 poster, attached to a telegraph pole outside the Post Office.

Linda Thomas, also of Fontygary Road added: "We have been printing letters to distribute among the rest of the villagers. When the 500 houses were built, we were promised the remaining land would be for community use, but it's slowly being whittled away.

"There is very little coastline left that has not been developed over the past few years. And what is left, we are guarding jealously. Very soon, all that will be left are the old asbestos fields. And I doubt very much they will be able to be developed."

Linda Gershenson added: "The proposed plans have been made available for people to view at Barry and Llantwit Major libraries, but not Rhoose. In effect, very few people know about it.

"I believe there is a meeting of the planning committee towards the end of October, so time is running short for people to write in with their formal objections. If we don't act quickly, we will lose another piece of our village for good."

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesman said: "A planning application has been submitted by Cofton Limited. Residents' objections will be considered in the context of a full report to the appropriate planning committee."
