Barry Ladies Hockey team faced Newport Ladies second eleven in their League game on Saturday September 28.
Barry were soon ahead through two simple goals scored by Ceri Western and Sam Preen. It quickly became evident that the home side were facing a young inexperienced team.
It was not surprising that by half time break, they had increased their score with a further three goals. The scorers were Jo Wright, Lisa Pinney and Sam Preen. To their credit, Newport had cut back the deficit with a goal from their centre mid field player.
In the second half, Newport were somewhat more organised in their man marking, which prevented Barry from running riot.
Quite a period of play passed before Barry scored again through Bethan Owens. Then close to the final whistle, Ceri scored her second goal giving Barry a very convincing win by 7 goals to 1.
It is also very encouraging that two of the scorers are two of the youngest players in the team.
On Saturday, Barry travelled to Pencoed to play Bridgend Ladies. The first quarter of the game saw both teams enjoying good ball possession, but they were unable to convert this into goals.
It fell to Barry to eventually open the scoring.
After a melee on the Bridgend goal line, it was wing Lisa Pinney who finally put the ball in the back of the net.
This lead was further increased shortly before halftime when Ceri Western hit a hard shot past the keeper.
The second half saw Bridgend pressurising the Barry goal.
Eventually, they were able to capitalise on this when a lapse in the Barry defence allowed them to score.
The game now took on a different complexion with some very scrappy play which was the result of both sides striving to score again.
This was finally resolved when Sam Preen hit a soft shot at goal which the Bridgend keeper misjudged allowing Barry to go further ahead.
It also seemed to demoralise the Bridgend team and it was not surprising that Ceri Western soon put the game beyond doubt with another superb shot at goal.
This must be one of Barry's best starts to their season of League games. However, they have yet to face some of the stronger teams in their division.
