50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of October 9, 1952:

One of the first contributions received by the Lord Mayor of London after the opening of the King George VI, National Memorial Fund was a greetings card containing four half crown savings stamps from Barry.

John Marsden, of Barry Island YPA, stepped up to receive one of the many trophies presented to clubs in the Barry and District Football League who gained honours last season.

A preview of the clothes to be worn in Coronation Year was shown together with a representative collection of autumn and winter fashions by Willsons, of Holton Road, at the Theatre Royal on Wednesday last in the third of Barry's Shopping Week mannequin parades.

The new chief clerk of the Barry and Cardiff County Courts will be Mr J A Lennox. He succeeds Mr John Betterton.

TV and radio 'pirates' beware. Any day now, in an area of 40 square miles controlled by the Head Postmaster of Barry, Mr F W Lomax, an extensive search will be carried out for those people who indulge in the practise of operating a radio or TV set without the required licence.

Laymen of the Church in Wales have now reached £187,000 of their target of £500,000 which they are hoping to raise by next Easter in order to improve the livelihood of the Welsh clergy.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of October 6, 1977:

On Thursday at the unearthly hour of 2.30am the Rotaract Club of Barry set out from the Town Hall Barry, to cycle to the Town Hall, Bristol, as part of the Round Britain Cycle Rally organised by the Rotaract Club of Swindon.

Entertaining Waterlooville in the replay of the second round of the Southern League Cup yesterday (Wednesday), Barry were unable to recover from a 2-0 half time deficit.

On Saturday 50 members of the Barry Island Darby and Joan Club returned from holiday at Pontin's South Devon Holiday Camp.

Barry's MP, Sir Raymond Gower, was the guest speaker at the Tuesday week meeting of the Cadoxton WRVS Darby and Joan Club. Members were told of an MP's day in Parliament.

Dr John Howden visited the Barry 20th Century Club to explain the British Heritage Coast scheme and make known plans for the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.
