It's a no-go area

TWO Knap residents are warning the area is fast becoming a crime and vandalism magnet - and not a place to go after dark.

The women, who did not want to be named, alerted the News to a growing problem of youth annoyance in the area.

One, a 36-year-old mother-of-two, said: "Just over a fortnight ago the stone balustrade around the gardens was smashed. The Vale council put barriers around the stonework to protect it, but even these were attacked."

According to the concerned homeowners, crowds of up to 40 teenagers loiter around the Knap lido and lake through the night, sometimes until 4.30am.

The other worried local, a 45-year-old mother-of-four, added: "The kids have found a way into the old resort and are sheltering in the changing rooms. They've even started a couple of fires."

Local dog owner Ron Peck, 66, from Barry Dock, said: "I've seen the area crumble over the years and gangs of youths have been a problem for a while. Last year, a friend of mine who lives here even considered moving because of the noise and nuisance."

PC Simon Rees, of Barry's Crime Prevention Panel, said: "We are aware of a problem around the Island and the Knap. In two operations spanning the end of July to the end of August, there were more than 20 arrests. Another operation last week resulted in six arrests, four from the terrace of the Knap.

"We are working in close partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the local community. If residents are worried about crime, they should call their community officer, PC Nathan Gerry. But if they see a criminal offence taking place, they should contact the police immediately."

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesman said: "The council has earmarked funds to carry out work at the two open shelters adjacent to the lake. The balustrade damaged by vandals will be replaced. Safety barriers will remain until the work is complete."
