BARRY Ladies Hockey team played their old rivals, Cardiff Ladies, in their first South Wales League game on Saturday.
Barry were at a disadvantage from the start, having to field one player short. Their team also included two new players.
Playing their usual attacking style, Barry surprisingly, soon had Cardiff pinned in their half of the field. However, the opening goal took some time. After a scramble in the goal mouth, it was left to Bethan Owens to finally put the ball in the back of the net.
After half time, Barry were faced with a differently organised Cardiff team. Man marking kept the Barry forwards tied down and soon Cardiff had equalised.
Then, rather against the run of play, they took the lead. A tiring Barry team were shocked.
Then, close to the whistle, their saviour came in the form of Ceri Western. Barry had been awarded a free hit just outside the circle. Ceri received the ball close to the back line and proceeded to blast the ball into the goal from the most acute angle.
This gave her team a draw and allowed them to start their points score. The team were also very pleased at the high standard of play of the new team members.
