Debut pair make mark in fine Dinas victory

THE VILLAGERS secured their first win in Division Three East last Saturday, when well fancied Builth Wells were the visitors to The Common.

Following the opening game defeat at Abergavenny, this was a much improved performance by the Villagers, and an encouraging performance for the first season at this higher level.

The early exchanges were dominated by penalties as debutant outside-half Daniel Jones kicked two penalties for a 6-0 lead. Builth fought back though, and J Brown replied with two penalties to tie the scores after half an hour.

The Villagers though, took control of the game before half-time with two quality tries.

First centre Chris O'Brien went over in the corner, and then in injury time, newcomer Ben Thomas scored his first try for the club. Daniel Jones converted for an 18-6 half-time lead.

The lead was extended ten minutes into the second-half, with a third Daniel Jones penalty, before Builth fought back with a try by C Ower, four minutes later. J Brown converted to set up a nerve-wracking finish.

Brown added a penalty with a few minutes to go, leaving Builth with just a try required to tie the game up. The Villagers held firm though, for a deserved victory.

The victory was soured though by a serious neck injury to club stalwart Matthew Hadley.

The club would like to wish Matthew well, and a full recovery from this injury.

The Seconds recorded their second victory of the season with a 47-7 victory over Cowbridge. Kyle Phillips (2), Darren Driscoll, Craig Driscoll, Tassos Asprou and Phil Young (2), were among the try scorers. Phil Young added two conversions and a penalty goal.

Next week we entertain Cardiff University on The Common in a Principality cup-tie, kick-off 2.30pm. The Seconds travel to Rhiwbina.
