Memories from Barry

50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of September 11, 1952: A young Barry singer having begun his broadcasting career with the BBC Scottish Orchestra, comes on the air from Wales for the first time on Sunday evening. He is Leslie Pearson, son of Mr and Mrs Bert Pearson of Pyke Street.

The recent high tides have resulted in an enormous amount of wreckage being washed up along the coast. It is believed that much of it is debris washed away by the recent storms at Lynmouth.

On Saturday, 700 members and children of the East End Progressive Club visited Clifton Down Zoological Gardens, Bristol.

A total of 12 guineas was collected in Station Street, Barry Dock, for the Lynmouth Disaster Fund. Organiser was Mrs M A Dimond.

Flooded basements and houses in Holton Road, were pumped out by the Barry Fire Service. The service was also called out do deal with the chimney fire in Burlington Street.

At the time of going to press a total of £250 had been received by the Mayor's Fund for the Lynmouth Disaster.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of September 8, 1977:

At the recent examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music the following pupils were successful in piano forte. Grade I: Alun Attwood; Grade II: Sarah Blackmore and Ann Righton; Grade VIII: Elizabeth Brown (merit).

Professor Emeritus Geoffrey Asprey of Dinas Powis, a consultant to the Faculty and Department of Education, University College Cardiff, has been appointed to the new board of governors of St Albans School, Pontypool.

Mr Bill Redrup introduced and welcomed to the St Nicholas Darby and Joan Club on Friday Mr Peter Davies, lecturer at the Polytechnic of Wales, Barry.

The Cardiff/Barry National Front group have written to local MP, Sir Raymond Gower, calling on him to take up with the Government the question of the legal rights of Parliamentary candidates, in view of the recent Ladywood by-election.

Mr Eric Cassidy has recently been appointed senior assistant at National Westminster Bank's South Wales Area Office, Mr Cassidy's wife Gaynor is a native of Barry and the couple have one son, Nigel aged four.
