Bee splashes out on a terror trip

A BARRY council worker who is petrified of both water and heights has splashed out on a trip on a tall ship!

Brave Bee Milbourn plans to set sail on the Stavros S Niarchos this Saturday as a form of aversion therapy!

The local authority employee, who works at the tourism department, is hoping to conquer her fears and have a great time too.

And she is so keen to go, she is paying for the one day sailing experience which will involve her forming part of the voluntary crew on board the boat.

She told the News: "I'm absolutely petrified of heights and of water but I've decided to jump in at the deep end - not literally of course"

The ship is due to sail at 9.30am on September 14, but all of the volunteers have to arrive at 7.15am in order to start their on board training, which will involve learning all of the procedures, especially in depth safety training.

There will be approximately fifteen voluntary crew members, who have all paid for the privilege of cruising their own ship.

Also on board will be the five fully qualified crew, which consists of a Captain, Chief Officer, Second Officer, Engineer and Boatswain.

The volunteers can join in with whatever activities they want to. Bee said: "The purpose of paying is to learn the ropes". She explained that they will get a chance to climb up the mast, but will be harnessed for safety.

As the Saturday morning progresses, the volunteers will assist in helping the crew. The cost to become a voluntary member of the crew for a day is about £70 plus insurance costs.

Bee, from Cowbridge, explained that she received the brochure from the Sailing Training Association about their 'Tall Ship Experiences', where you can participate in sailing expeditions which take you around the world.

When she discovered that 'Tall Ships' had started doing one day sailing trips, she decided to sign up, because during a day trip, she would find out whether she enjoyed sailing.

The Sailing Training Association is a registered charity, which trains individuals aged 18-24 years.

They learn various skills and roles, as well as how to face challenges. To fund the charity, adults can pay for a sailing adventure, like Bee did.

If you want to travel further, you could embark on a 'Tall Ship' tour to the Azures or the Canaries. These usually last around 2-3 weeks.
