Success for Barry pupils

BARRY pupils have been celebrating a bumper crop of GCSE exam results.

Bryn Hafren Girls Comprehensive School averaged over 50 percent of passes for grades A to C and 93.1 percent for passes of grades A to G. This is a significant increase on last year, which saw A to G passes as just 89 percent.

Head teacher Irene Mackie said: "We are delighted with the results the girls have achieved this year. We have way exceeded our target set by the education authority which was around the 43 to 46 percent. And the increase in A to Gs shows how we are a truly comprehensive school, attending the needs of all our students."

Student Elizabeth Bowen, 16, is taking home four A*s, six As and one C. She will be going on to study A-levels next year. And Holly Gardner was over the moon with her B in Information Technology.

Barry Boys Comprehensive enjoyed their own successes as 45 percent of all students gained grades A* to C and the A to G grades have improved to almost 90 percent, an increase of six percent since last year.

Head teacher David Swallow said: "We're thrilled with the efforts of our students, as 98 percent of them will leave school with at least one recognisable qualification. We feel the results reflect the success of the partnership we have established between students, parents and the school and justify our motto of 'An opportunity to succeed."

Pupil Rhys Williams completed all 12 GCSEs and achieved seven A*s, two As, one B and two Cs. He said: "I'm pleased with my results, and now I'm moving to Gloucestershire to start a professional football career." His friend Tom Bowen got six As, four Bs and two Cs. He will be staying on to do A-levels in English and Maths.

Paula Moore, who was featured in last week's News, achieved one B and one C in her GCSE Business Studies and Michael Lewis got seven Bs, four Cs and two Ds. Paula will do the rest of her GSCEs next year and Michael is going on to study History, Media, Politics and IT at A-level.
