MILLWOOD Bowling club held their annual charity day at the club on Sunday, August 18.
The two captains, Mrs Margaret Emeny for the Ladies, and Brian Davies, the Men's captain. had decided at the start of the season that the charity to benefit would be LATCH, based at Llandough Hospital.
LATCH stands for (L)landough (A)ims to (T)reat (C)hildren with cancer and leukaemia with (H)ope.
Whilst the actual charity day was on August 18 the fund raising activities have been going on since early in the season with numerous events aimed at boosting the amount collected, which included a stall at BP's car boot sale, with captain Brian Davies in the queue to ensure a good pitch position at 6am and President Stan Rogers not far behind.
This particular effort raised over £200.
On August 18, the 'Spider Event' on the Green introduced the spirit of fund raising, with each participant paying to take part and also each member contributing a pound to play in the fun game which was to follow.
Marlene Blake manned her annual bric a brac stall which again was a great success, raising £150.
There was a huge raffle, with a multitude of prizes, (donated by members) and a guess the weight of the cake competition, the cake baked and provided by Mrs Jean Brown and the hard work of selling the tickets done by youngest member Jody Davies.
Other contributions came from Club Secretary Brian Payne and £30 was collected from the Monday evening 'Spoons' matches, with thanks for organising those Mondays going to players Bob Wyatt and Morris Jodrell.
After the fun bowls game was completed out on the green the members moved indoors to the club house for refreshments which were again provided by the members.
Then when all the monies were collected from the numerous sources, the club captain Margaret Emeny and Brian Davies took the opportunity to thank the members for their magnificent efforts in raising the sum of £1,200.
She then presented the cheque to Mrs Sian Howell who is the LATCH appeals organiser for the Barry area and also a member of the LATCH executive.
Mrs Howell responded by thanking the Millwood Club members for the magnificent gesture in raising this incredible sum of money and went on to explain some of the work of LATCH, and also assured members that the money collected would be used primarily for the benefit of the children and not on administration.
Mrs Howell also explained that the unit, which is currently based at Llandough Hospital is expected to have to transfer to University of Wales Hospital (Heath) in the not too distant future and major funding will also be required, to achieve that transfer.
Mrs Howell concluded by thanking the Millwood members again for their outstanding efforts and expressed her delight at being asked to attend to receive the donation on behalf of LATCH.
