50 Years Ago

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 28, 1952:

A collection taken among the staff in the Chocolate Box Cafe, by Mrs T Davies and Mrs B Maher, realised 10s 2d towards the Lynmouth Disaster Fund.

Mr James A Brain, of 106 Barry Road, is among entrants for "The Model Engineer" Exhibition which will be opened by the Duke of Edinburgh at the new Royal Horticultural Hall, Westminster, on October 20.

Mr David C Salter, of 26 Merthyr Street, Barry, was successful in passing his BSc London (External) examinations held this year.

The children's events were held on Saturday afternoon, at the Watch Tower Bay, in glorious sunshine and attracted numerous entries. The first event was the children's (under eight) crab fishing contest. Winners were Greatest number - Raymond Hawkins and Philip Searle; Largest - Raymond Hawkins.

Ann Jones, the Barry swimmer added to her already long list of successes the Ladies' trophy at the Barry Amateur Swimming Club's Channel swim on Thursday.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 25, 1977:

The winners of an automatic washing machine in a competition run by Tower Discount in conjunction with Lever Brothers, were Mr and Mrs Oliver, of 36 Broad Street, Barry.

The recent house to house collection made by the Barry Tenovus Cancer Committee proved very successful. An amount of £454 was raised and this is already being put to good use in South Wales by the Cardiff Committee.

At the recent examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music the following were successful. Grade II, Jonathan Shaw, Angharad Jones (merit), Meriel Beatty (merit), and Therese Ann Marie (merit).

Members and wives of the Dow Chemical Supervisors Association held a barbecue at the Sully Hospital Social Club on Tuesday week. Their guest was "Sidana" the local telepathic illusionist who displayed his mystifying powers.
