I am concerned about ensuring that children can have fun and be safe when playing sport. Around eight million UK children take part in sport every week. Most will attend well-run sports groups where they can develop their skills and have fun in a safe environment.
But very occasionally there can be dangers. Sports activities allow adults close contact with children often on their own. Sadly, there are individuals who choose this kind of work in order to harm children.
I am pleased to learn the NSPCC is campaigning for improved child protection in sport with the support of the Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Sharron Davies, MBE. Any parent or carer whose child is involved with sport wants to know that his or her child is safe from harm when in the care of someone else.
Therefore, I believe it is essential that parents and carers know the questions they need to ask sports organisations to safeguard their children.
I hope that your readers will show their support to end child abuse in sport by logging onto www.kickitintotouch.com and reading the child protection messages, so they know what to be aware of, what action to take and who to contact if they have any concerns.
