50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 21, 1952: Mrs W Boucher, of 6 Victoria Road, Barry, obtained her third gold bar for Old Time dancing. A trophy was presented to her at the Old Time Ball at Bindles.

Mr Raymond Gower MP, was among the guests at a party given for officers of HMS "Wave" by Mr and Mrs Alan Reardon-Smith at White House, Barry.

At the "Go-as-you-please" championship of Wales, held at Pontypridd last Saturday Iris Lewis, Sheila Phipps and Olwin Sansome came fifth in the competition and received consolation prizes.

A further step towards the final restoration of Barry's Memorial Hall, gutted by fire at the beginning of the War, may be anticipated following representations made by Mr Raymond Gower MP, to the Minister of Housing and Local Government.

Holidaying in Barry this week is Mrs Robert Bovard, of Southern California, who is an old Barrian. She was formerly Rose Woodham the fourth daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Edward Woodham.

At the Witchill Estate Tenants' Field Day, on Saturday, the crowning of Miss Witchell 1952 (Miss Shirley Thomas) was performed by the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress (Cllr and Mrs Bert King).

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 18, 1977:

The £2m Barry Docks link road could be started in 1980 and completed in about two years, the new chairman of the South Glamorgan County Council's Environment and Planning Committee, Cllr Ronald Richards told the News this week.

As the result of a recent sponsored walk, Barry Young Conservatives decided to give half to Cancer Research and half to the Vale Silver Jubilee Appeal. The appeal cheque was handed to the Vale Mayor (Cllr John Cotter) by Mr Malcolm Clark, chairman of Barry YCs.

The "happy participation" of the people of the town during Barry Carnival Week has been praised by the Carnival Committee. The secretary of the committee Mrs Jackie Visser, of Friars Road, Barry Island, said that plans for next year's carnival were already in mind.

Fine performances were again put up by Barry athletes in the under-21 Home Countries International at Teeside on Saturday. Carmen Smart ran her best 100m of the season to gain fourth place in 12.1sec.

Men working for contractors on the Aberthaw A and B power stations called a lightning half day strike on Tuesday afternoon after the breakdown of efforts to end a four week old dispute.
