50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry District News of August 7, 1952:

The Barry Lifeboat was launched at noon yesterday in response to a call that a Vampire jet had crashed into the Bristol Channel, two miles south of Barry.

In the architectural section at the Welsh National Eisteddfod at Aberystwyth a design for an art gallery for the display of 100 pictures won an award of £10 to A Poniatowski.

Mr Kenneth H Clark, only son of Mr and Mrs P Clark, of Somerset Road East, has passed the final examination in Dental Mechanic and Materials of the City and Guilds of the London Institute.

A recent award by the South Wales and Monmouth Joint Wages Board, which is to be implemented by the Barry Town Council, will mean that the authority will have to find £3,194 annually to meet the higher wages of employees.

At the Bridgend show on Wednesday, Mr M Monk the well-known Barry pig breeder won first prizes in the classes for sow or gilt in farrow, white, and for bacon pig, under nine score deadweight.

Surprise presentations to certain officials by the president, Mr W H Gardiner, provided an unexpected highlight to the annual general meeting of the Barry and District Association Football League on Friday Night.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 4, 1977: Strong gusty winds blowing through Barry Docks on Saturday nearly brought disaster to about a dozen of the 88 floats that were preparing to take part in Barry Carnival Procession, but the procession provided a marvellous climax to the week.

BP Chemicals were given the go ahead by the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council on Monday to expand their present PVC making complex.

Appointments to the Welsh Consumer Council announced recently by Mr John Fraser, Minister of State for Prices and Consumer Protection, include Mr F C John of Barry who was employed by the former Barry Corporation for 27 years as its housing superintendent.

Pupils of St Cadoc's RC Comprehensive School presented their headmaster, Mr E J Brook MA with an easel and brushes and oil paints to mark his retirement.

The Barry, Penarth and South Glamorgan Canine Society held their monthly match recently. The results given by Mr Alf Jones were as follows: Mrs S Griffiths, of Rhoose, owned the best puppy, which was an alsatian and the best adult was an afghan owned by Mrs Scandrett, whose dog also won the best in match.
