THE COUNCIL are forgetting the reason for the Memorial Hall's existence, i.e. a dignified way of remembering local people who lost their lives, initially during the Great War and latterly the Second World War.
To trivialise it by signposting it as 'The Memo' shows a great lack of sensitivity to the many local people who lived through these terrible conflicts and those whose loved ones are listed amongst the fallen.
As a boy during the war I watched the Memorial Hall burn. It was very badly damaged and stood derelict for a number of years, but the council eventually managed to rebuild it. Just as well our present council were not in charge. They would probably have sold it to a property developer to redevelop for executive housing.
