A BARRY girl who embarked on a mission to help change part of the Third World had the time of her life - in part thanks to readers of the Barry and District News.
Sophie Cureton, of Harbour Road, set off for a 12-week voluntary placement in Belize in January.
Heading for the Toledo region, one of the poorest area in the south of the country, Sophie was involved in the Gap Challenges scheme.
She found herself helping with village projects like teaching, administration, youth development and 'agro-processing', working with local producers.
She said: "I had to find £1,400 for the package and the flights.
"It was a voluntary thing, but I needed help with the funds. I made an appeal through the Barry and District News and the result was brilliant.
"I'd especially like to thank David Mitchell, owner of Scaftag and Safetrack Ltd, Trevor Park of Provincial Builders and Reverend Irfon James and the United Reform Church in Windsor Road. Between them, they gave me £500 which paid for my flight."
The 19-year-old worked for six months before the trip and raised enough cash to see her through the placement and fit in some travel for two months afterwards.
She added: "I can't describe the experience in a few simple words because it was over and above what I ever expected.
"I hoped the trip would change my life and it did. I had a fantastic time in the three months placement and then travelled around the region for a couple of months after that. I will never forget my time over there, and I really appreciate the help given to me by my community."
The determined young woman is now looking forward to September where she will take her place in Liverpool University studying design.
