A GRIEVING Barry man has abseiled down the Millennium Stadium in memory of his dead mother.
Mark Williamson, of Dawan Close saw a leaflet advertising the jump for funds just three weeks ago when he was visiting his mum, Margaret Williamson, in Holme Tower, Penarth. He said: "It was so near to the date of the abseil that I didn't know if I could do it.
"When the confirmation came through on June 28 to say I could still register I had just seven days to sort out the minimum funds needed to qualify. But my friends, family and neighbours rallied around and were brilliant.
"I also had real help from my employers Pro Gas, from Simply Hair, Vale Heating Spares, Melvins Builders and Glamorgan Plumbing.
"Within a week, I had not only found the £100 required, but was topping the £700 mark, with the promise of more to come."
His mum Margaret who was 65 had been going in to Holme Towers on a regular basis for a while, but in the last month had to stay there permanently.
Mark, 43, said: "Mum had cancer and I could tell she was losing the battle. So this was extra special to me.
"When I was told I could do the jump, I was really happy. I had seen the work the carers do in Holme Tower and how much they had helped my mum. Marie Curie is a fantastic charity that supports many people.
But within the short space of time between registering for the abseil and doing it on Sunday July 7, Margaret died.
Mark added: "I felt that I was doing it in her memory. Not only was it a fantastic experience that I really enjoyed, but it was very touching. I knew I was doing this for my mum's memory and it made that bit more moving."
