50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 3, 1952:

It has recently been announced that Miss Denise Rees, Well Walk, Barry, has been successful in gaining her degree of B.Mus in all three parts from Cardiff University.

At a St John Ambulance competition at Barry on Tuesday, Dr M V Roberts invested Mr Williams Harris with a 21-years service medal.

After 33 years service with the Barry Corporation, Mr W H Lane, repairs inspector, is retiring on July 24.

The Barry lifeboat is to be launched at 1.30pm on Saturday to attend the Penarth Regatta.

A fine all round performance in a school cricket match has earned Patrick Collins, Daniel Street, Cadoxton, a cricket bat presented by the N W D Yardley Cricket Bureau of the Sunday Chronicle playing for St Helens against Gladstone at Barry Island cricket ground.

The Barry Conservative and Unionist Association have been fortunate in securing Dr Charles Hill MP as the chief speaker at their fete and rally.

As one of the items in the 50th Year Programme the Barry Male Voice Choir entered for the Competition at Ruardean on Saturday.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 30, 1977:

A decision on the future of teacher training at the Barry site of the Polytechnic of Wales is expected very soon.

Detective Sergeant Tom Fahey, of Barry CID, has been promoted to the rank of inspector and took up his position in Ely, Cardiff, on Monday.

Thousands of excited children and adults lined the route for the Queen's short but memorable visit to Barry on Tuesday.

The Conservatives strengthened their already stronghold on South Glamorgan County Council when they won two seats in the Dyfan Ward by-election in Barry on Thursday.

On Tuesday week two coaches with members of the Barry Island Darby and Joan Club made an early start for their journey to Stoke, arranged by their club leader and local WRVS organiser, Mrs L Heald.

The Barry Town Mayor (Cllr Ken Adams) held his civic service at the Salvation Army Citadel, Kendrick Road, on Sunday.

The parent teacher association of St Cadoc's RC Comprehensive School held an extremely successful "pizza and plonk" dance at the school on Friday week.
