Why it's great to be Upstaged

BARRY'S young performers are gearing up for the Penarth Holiday Festival which kicks off this week.

Youngsters from UpStagers - the unique Batho-Davies Theatre Arts ensemble - can't wait to tread the boards in 'Showtime 2002' at the Paget Rooms on July 16.

The confident performers will soon be staging 'Showtime 2002', when they will show off their talents.

The annual Showtime presentation is the culmination of three terms of disciplined work in the performing arts. The school format includes weekly classes and workshops in drama, music theatre and dance, led by highly experienced theatre and education professionals.

Jeff Guppy, the well-known musical director, reminds the singing students during rehearsals: "Go for it, you're sounding great."

Meanwhile, Dot Russell, a specialist in primary education, gently encourages the under sevens "not to be shy" when learning and trying new things.

Famous choreographer and patron of the school, Irving Davies, oversees from the sidelines, promoting and endorsing the value of expert tuition.

Patricia Batho-Davies, director and founder of UpStagers, enjoys great satisfaction in attracting and working with fellow professionals - people who share her belief that all children given half the best chance can achieve wonders.

This year, Showtime - with its large exuberant cast of 3-18 year olds - promises yet again to be a holiday festival highlight.

The programme will include scenes from Fame, Chorus Line, Cabaret and a Hollywood sequence fondly paying tribute to those bygone glamorous stars of the Silver Screen. To book or for more information, phone 2053 0913.
