50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 26, 1952:

Miss Mair Lougher, Gladstone Road, Barry, who has been appointed head teacher of the new Colcot school is a native of Barry.

Mr H E Harris was the speaker at No 3 (Suburb) Branch OAP meeting on Monday.

Arrangements for this year's Barry Marine Festival, commencing August 17, are now being finalised, and it has been learnt that HMS "Wave," a Fishery Protection Minesweeper will be visiting Barry as part of the festival.

W Perkin of Barry, has been chosen as a forward in the Glamorgan County Water Polo team to meet Gloucestershire at Cheltenham tomorrow evening. R L Davies also of Barry is a reserve.

Miss Shirley Thomas was elected "Miss Witchell 1952" at the Witchell Estate Tenants Association's social evening at the WETA Hall, Wednesday week.

The annual general assembly Investiture was held at Cardiff on Thursday, when the Lord Prior of the Order, The Lord Wakehurst, KCMG, made the presentation of awards. Among those who were invested were Mr Albert Edward Williams, Corps Superintendent, Barry, and District Corps, who was promoted from Serving Brother to Officer Brother.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 23, 1977:

The British Empire Medal awarded in the Queen's Silver Jubilee and Birthday Honours List, has gone to a Barry man, whose connections with the Territorial Army Volunteer Reserve go back to 1948. WO2 Frederick William Reginald Drake, of Devon Avenue, Barry, is a senior nurse at Llandough Hospital and a member of the thoracic team, nursing heart and lung cases.

The success of the recent, short tour in Sweden by the Barry Town FC has prompted the committee of the Barry and District Youth Football League to accept an invitation to undertake a similar tour later this year.

While the unemployment figure continues to mount nationally the job prospects in Barry look even gloomy with the threat of more than 100 redundancies at a Barry Steel fabricating plant.

The Land Authority of Wales, which has been refused planning permission for residential development on 73.4 acres of land at Cwm Barry, bordering Porthkerry Country Park, is now seeking permission to develop a smaller piece of land.
