New sports manager plans changes

THE VALE of Glamorgan Council has appointed a new assistant manager for three of its major sporting venues.

In his new role, 25-year-old Darren Phillips will be aiming to increase the range of activities at the Colcot Sports Centre, Jenner Park and the Holm View Centre in Barry.

Now in his second year of study with the Institute of Sports Recreational Management, Darren began his career with the Vale Council's Leisure Department seven years ago as a lifeguard at The Knap in Barry, and later progressed from supervisor to assistant manager at Barry Leisure Centre.

The Colcot centre will soon open its new Hammer Strength Gum, a purpose built weightlifting and pure body building centre, while the Council is progressing with an exciting project at the Holm View with a planned artificial turf training area.

Work to improve access for the disabled will soon be taking place at all three sites. Darren says: "It's a challenging position which covers a lot of new areas in sports and leisure management but I am looking forward to it immensely and am keen to get started and develop the three sites."

The Colcot artificial turf pitch and the adjacent dual use building, which has cricket, five-a-side football and badminton facilities, are available for hire and further information can be obtained on 01446 735182. Further information on the Holm View centre, with its multi functional dry leisure facilities, can be obtained on 01446 700258.
