50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 5, 1952:

In a 25 mile road time trial (mountain tumble course), organised by the Barry Road Cycling Club, for members only, on Whit Monday, the result was: First C Crompton; second B Williams and third W Hughes.

In the recent Glamorgan County Youth Eisteddfod at Bridgend, St Helen's Youth Club gained first prize in the Club Record Book and a third prize in the art section.

Members of the Barry Social Centre for the Blind, with officials and guides, enjoyed the sea at Ogmore-by-Sea, where they went for their annual summer outing.

Mr John Bailey, a director of C H Bailey Ltd, and of the Barry Town AFC, has been elected an industrial representative of the South East Divisional Executive.

The Ministry of Education announces that 8,000 places are available next autumn for women students at training colleges for teachers in England and Wales . There were, at the beginning of May, 1,300 places still unfilled.

Inspector J D Jones, the new inspector of the Barry Dock Division was welcomed to Barry Police Court on Friday by the presiding magistrate Sir H H Merrett.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 2, 1977:

It's going to be a busy week in Barry next week with Silver Jubilee celebrations throughout the town on Monday and Tuesday and the Urdd National Eisteddfod from Wednesday to Saturday, when thousands of children from all over Wales will flock into the town and surrounding areas.

Children from the Cadoxton Infants' School won first prize with their caterpillar collage in the arts and crafts section of the Urdd National Eisteddfod and proudly displayed their certificate.

On May 6, there were 97 unfilled vacancies recorded at the Barry and Llantwit Major Employment Office.

Four pupils from Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School won a British Achievements quiz by the House of Fraser in Howells, Cardiff, on Friday, winning £50 for the school. The four girls were Philippa Lloyd, Susan Jones, Susan Rogers and Diane Williams.

Members of the YMCA gymnastic team, who won the overall team championship for the third successive year at the Welsh Gymnastic Championship were Peter Haysham, Elizabeth Sales, Julie Buffin, Tracey Edwards, Lesley Gardiner, Dominic Peck, Claire Ashill, Amanda Cutajar, Anne Gardiner, Dawn Northcott, Michael Buffin, Robert Gardiner, David Buffin and Jason Ford.

After over eight years at the RAF School of Physical Training, RAF St Athan, Flight Sergeant Eileen Beasley is leaving.
