Jacob snaps up top prize

A YOUNG Barry schoolboy has take top place at the National Eisteddfod.

Six-year-old Jacob Briscombe's photographs were so sharp, he not only won the junior award but scooped the overall prize as well.

The Ysgol Sant Curig pupil's pictures of his classmates playing won him the top award throughout the whole of Wales.

Jacob's success began in April, when he was given a black and white disposable camera by his teacher, Nia Beynon.

He took photographs as his friends played in the classroom, put them into the school competition - and was thrilled to win the gold prize.

But he was even more chuffed when they were sent off to the Eisteddfod, which looked at talent from all over the Principality up to the age of 25.

Not only did Jacob win the under-eights category, but his photos were chosen as the best in Wales.

Mrs Beynon said: "We're so proud of him. The photographs really are lovely, and for Jacob to have done so well in our national festival is a wonderful achievement."

Proud mum Michelle added: "When I saw the pictures, I think I could see what the judges found so appealing. The children all look so happy and cheerful. They're very uplifting pictures. They're the first he's ever taken."

A modest Jacob said: "I didn't mind not playing with my friends. It was fun taking their pictures and I get a shield as well."

He was presented with the Milner Prize shield at a ceremony on Monday.
