Locals warn of junction danger

BARRY residents are living in fear of an "accident waiting to happen" near their homes.

Locals living along Pencoedtre Road are worried about cars turning into Churchfields from Pencoedtre Road.

Cllr Bob Wilkinson, who is supporting the residents, told the News: "I first became aware of this problem a few years ago, when one of my constituents mentioned it to me. But I had no idea until recently bad it is."

The corner is wide and there are white lines painted in the middle to guide cars that want to turn into Churchfields.

But there is no way of controlling the speed of the on-coming cars, who cut the corner so badly they are actually travelling on the wrong side of the road.

Robert Cornwall, 78, of Pencoedtre Road said: "I've noticed the amount of traffic getting heavier since the new housing estate was built, but even so, this has been a problem since the Churchfields estate was opened in 1988. If something isn't done to calm and redirect the cars here soon, there will be a tragic accident."

Doris Morgan, 72, added: "I've lived her 42 years, and I've seen the sheer volume of cars increase terribly. And if you dare try to reverse your car out of your drive at either of the busiest times of the day, you run the risk of either getting tooted and shouted at, or narrowly missing another car. It's a dreadful situation."

Cllr Bob Wilkinson added: "Myself and Cllr Neil Moore have been to see Keith Jones on the Highways department of the Vale of Glamorgan Council to try and come up with some kind of solution. But it's clear that this can't go on for much longer. I think it's only the care taken by the people living here that someone hasn't been killed yet."

A Vale of Glamorgan council spokesman said: "In consultation with the local member, the council will seek to deal with road safety issues which are concerning local residents."
