EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 29, 1952:
* At a meeting of the Barry Health Committee on Tuesday Dr Mary Lennox, Medical Officer for Barry, said an outbreak of an "obscure illness" which affected 16 Barry residents in the town was found to be trichiniasis, a rare disease which originated in pigs.
* A glorious spell of weather brought heavy crowds to Barry's beaches over the weekend and also to the Cold Knap Swimming pool which had a record opening week with about 4,000 bathers on Sunday.
* The Sunday School Anniversary of the Barry Navy (Luchana) Mission coincided with Empire Youth Sunday. The children were prepared by Mrs E Doble (elocution) and Mrs Muriel F Davies (musical section). * The alleged ferocity of a monkey kept by a tenant of a council hut in Buttrills Grove was brought to the notice of Barry Housing Management Committee, on Monday, in a letter from the Chief Constable.
25 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 26, 1977:
* A dance held to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Sybil Marks as a dancing teacher raised £500 for the Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan's (Cllr John Cotter) Silver Jubilee.
* Mrs Evelyn Brown, president of the Soroptimist International Club of Barry and district, recently presented a cheque for £500 to the Jane Hodge Holiday Home for handicapped children at Cowbridge.
* Recently the Edna Matthews School of Dancing held its fourth annual charity concert in the Memorial Hall.
* Two Chelsea Pensioners will be the guests of No 1 Sergeants' Mess RAF St Athan, for the period June 8-14.
* A "Brains Trust" proved a popular event at St Baruch's Ladies' Group on Friday week, when the topics on wide variety of subjects were put to the panel for their views.
