EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 22, 1952:

* On Saturday afternoon 120 Boy Scouts of Barry and district took part in a "Wide Game" in Porthkerry Park.

* There was warm applause at the St Aidan's Gymnastic Club's annual championships, held on Monday evening, when Mr D J P Richards, who presided, announced that Barry-born Ken Buffin, who represented Great Britain in the 1948 Olympic Games, has again been chosen for the games to be held in July in Helsinki.

* A native of Barry, Mr W R Griffiths, who is now residing at Surrey, gave a talk on his career to members of the No 3 Branch of the Old Age Pensioners when they met on Monday.

* On Saturday the point races for the Dinghy Classes of the Barry Yacht Club began. In the 16ft class Dianne, Jeanne and Stella Maris fought for first place.

* While relaxing in the sun at Whitmore Bay Barry Island on Friday afternoon, Mr A C Smith, Cafe Royal, was disturbed by the shouts of children who were paddling nearby.

He hurried to the water and found a baby octopus in the surf. * The County School Governors are to send a letter of appreciation to Miss D M Rawlinson, senior English mistress at the Girls' School, who is retiring at the end of the term.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 19, 1977:

* Barry is to get its long-awaited link road to the M4. The Welsh Office has at last declared its intention of going ahead.

* Officials and playing members of the Barry Town Football Club left on Monday for their 10-day tour of Sweden.

* Barry's Welsh amateur international boxer Charlie Brown has been selected in the three man Welsh team for the European Championships in East Germany, May 27-June 6.

* A long playing record, recorded from a live show given by a well known comedian Lenny Windsor at the Hotel International, Rhoose, last year, is due to be released next Wednesday, May 25.

* Barry-born geologist, 34-year-old Dr Michael Bassett, is flying to Siberia on Sunday as a guest of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.

* Last year's Rhoose Carnival Queen, Miss Rose Marie Cook crowned her successor, 19-year-old Lorraine Martin, of Porthkerry Road, Rhoose. Second was Michele Bevan, of Ceri Road, Rhoose, and third, Miss Catherine Hayne, of Station Road, Rhoose.
